Expert grids are built so that box-level logic isn't enough: the decisive patterns stretch across the whole board. The classic example is the X-Wing — one digit forming a rectangle across two rows and two columns — whose geometry eliminates candidates far outside the boxes you were staring at.

Alongside it you'll want the XY-Wing, a three-cell pivot pattern that turns pairs of candidates into eliminations. Neither is hard to apply once spotted; the expert skill is the spotting. Expect long quiet stretches, then a single pattern that unlocks five moves at once.

If you're transitioning up from hard, expect your solve times to double before they settle. That's normal: you're not slower, the puzzles simply hide their break-in points deeper. Train the patterns individually on our technique pages, then come back — a memorized X-Wing shape gets spotted in seconds, while an unfamiliar one never gets spotted at all.
